How can my patients assess the quality?
- Tell your patients to crack the capsule or open the bottle and sample the oil, using nose and taste buds just as when buying fresh fish. Fish oil that smells exceedingly fishy is usually rancid, as the high number of double bonds found in omega-3s make them all highly susceptible to oxygen. It is also important to consider toxic metals and pesticides. Fish oils from Norwegian manufacturers are carefully purified in these regards and the quality control levels are very strict.
