Manufacturers say their new feed containing omega-3 is so smart and scientific, but the feed contains only a very small amount of low potency omega-3 flaxseed

Dr. Bo Martensen

Omega-3 fish oil is hailed as nature's best inflammation fighter and is probably the most recommended nutritional supplement worldwide. However, what is little understood by the public is that clinical trials and investigations consistently use a much higher dose than the 1 or 2 soft gels that end up at the breakfast table or the tiny dash added to the new animal feed products. Most experts agree that full prevention and effective treatment only kick in when you consistently give a daily dose of at least 2g (1 teaspoon of oil or 6 to 8 softgels) of pure EPA/ DHA to humans or 1 oz Wellpride? omega-3 to horses (the equivalent to 30 to 40 softgels). Manufacturers say their new feed containing omega-3 is so smart and scientific, but the feed contains only a very small amount of low potency omega-3 flaxseed and lots of omega-6, and is then claimed to have the perfect omega-3 to 6 ratios. This does not make sense when a major part of the inflammation problem is that the body is already glutted with too much omega- 6 and other pro-inflammation substances and has too little omega- 3. So why would manufacturers add even more omega-6 to your horse's food? Because omega-6 is inexpensive, especially when partially hydrogenated. It has a long shelf life and is easily made palatable to the horse. It is important to add fish oil to the feed, but not in conjunction with more omega-6. To obtain adequate dosage of omega-3 one must use pure, top quality liquid fish oil. Will horses accept these required amounts of pure fish oil? The answer is "yes" if the quality (taste, smell and purity) is satisfactory. Wellpride fish oil for horses is poured directly over the feed and has overcome all palatability problems.
